Wireshark หรือชื่อเดิม คือ Ethereal เป็นโปรแกรม network protocol analyzer
โดยทำหน้าที่ในการวิเคราะห์ ระบบ Network โดย
Wireshark นั้นสามารถทำงานได้ทั้งบนระบบปฏิบัติการ Unix
และ Windows และสามารถทำการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลบนเครือข่าย
ได้หลากหลายรูปแบบ และมีฟีเจอร์ต่างๆ เช่น การดูรายละเอียดต่างๆ
ของข้อมูลที่ต้องการวิเคราะห์ด้วยการดักจับข้อมูลตัวนั้น (Capture) สามารถ
ทำการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลได้ทั้งแบบการเชื่อมต่อแบบทันที(Live)และ
จากไฟล์ที่ทำการดักจับ(Capture) และที่สำคัญ Wireshark
นั้นเป็นซอฟต์แวร์แบบ Open Source หรือ Freeware
ซึ่งให้ใช้งานโดยไม่ต้องเสียค่าใช้จ่ายและมีต้นฉบับสำหรับให้นำไป
พัฒนาต่อยอดได้อีกด้วย ปัจจุบัน Wireshark ได้พัฒนามาถึง
